BNR NEWS
OSU Is At It Again!
Some of you may already be
aware of this but, OSU is once again exhibiting its typical behavior of
making major changes, affecting Black people, during the Summer when
they know there are few Black students and faculty on campus to stop Them.
Such is the case with the firing of Dr. Judson L. Jeffiries as Director of
the African-American Studies Community Extension Center (AAACEC) located
at 905 Mt. Vernon Ave.
Since his arrival some 3 years
ago, Dr. Jeffries has been able to pull the Extension Center out of
virtual obscurity. When you read the attached documents you may conclude,
as we have, that Dr. Jefferies may have been fired because he is doing too
good of a job.
We must all remember how the
Extension Center came to be. The Extension Center is part of the
African-American & African Studies Department (AAAS) at OSU, Formerly
known as the Black Studies Department.
The Black Studies Department,
The Office of Minority Affairs and The Office of Black Student Programs
(now known as African-American Student Services) are the result of student
protests which shut OSU down for 2 weeks in the Spring of 1970. None of
these programs would exist, today had it not been for the struggle and
sacrifice of Black students and others!
The Extension Center was
established for the purpose of providing a direct link between OSU and
the larger Black community.
It should be noted that the
Frank W. Hale Black Cultural Center, established in the 1980's, is also
the result of Black student protests.
It is our opinion that the
firing of Dr. Jefferies may be part of an effort to return the Extension
Center to a position of obscurity and lack of productivity in order to
justify its elimination.
This concerns us because we
feel this may be part of a pattern which is occurring on many campuses,
around the country, to eliminate all specific Black student programming in
favor of "multi-culturalism" (whatever it is). Black people have fought
hard to get the small amount of what we have now. We cannot just sit back
and allow what we have worked for to be simply taken away!
We encourage you to read the
attached documents and if you feel so compelled, please support Dr.
Jeffries by contacting the OSU Administration and demanding that he be
re-instated immediately.
